Why poker is like investing

For the most part, poker is a very unique hobby – there’s no other game quite like it. However, there is one pursuit that is frequently compared to poker, both online and in real life – investing. On the face of it, that seems like an unusual comparison to make but once you dig a little deeper, you start to see the similarities. Here’s what we’ve found so far!

Money sense

Playing  poker for real money  requires that you have a constant sense of how much money is on the table now, might be on the table in the future and how much your reserves are. In investing, the same money sense is essential as well. You’ve always got to keep an eye on the financial stakes at hand in order to know which way to bet – or when it’s necessary to get out entirely.

Deductive reasoning

The main reason we at Khelo365 love poker is because of the deduction involved. Poker is not a complete information game such as chess – you never have total knowledge of all the cards in play – but you still have to bet. That’s where deductive reasoning comes in, because you will need to use logic and reason to figure out what cards your opponents might have and what they might be looking for. The same principle applies to investing, because it’s impossible to know all the factors involved in whether a venture will flourish or fail; but you can reason your way towards prosperity.

The human element

“Play the man, not the game” is a famous poker saying but it could equally be an investment saying. In poker, you have to obviously read your opponents – any giveaways or tells they might have could go a long way towards helping you deduce what they’ve got. When it comes to investments, however, the person you need to read the most is yourself. It’s human nature to want to stay in investments that have been profitable in the past even though all the signs are saying that it will shortly crash; similarly, you’ll want to get out of investments that do badly even if reason suggests that they’ll recover soon. You need to master the human element to do well in business or in poker.

Knowing when to fold

Following on from the above point, it’s hugely important to know when to fold whether you’re talking about poker or investing. At certain points, you’ve just got to cut your losses and get out before you lose even more. Many poker players and investors have a tendency to stick with bad hands or bad investments because of optimism or hope, but the really successful ones never hesitate to cut their losses when the situation calls.

Rational vs. emotional

One thing you’ll learn very quickly as you’re playing poker online in India with real money involved – you cannot let emotions control you. Similarly, investors cannot afford to let emotions dictate their strategy. Each hand and investment has to be treated on its own merits, irrespective of what’s gone before. You need to keep your emotions in check and let the rational side of you call the shots.

And there you go, that’s all the ways we found in which playing  poker  online for real money is like investing. Did we miss any? If so,let us know!
